Preschoolers are movers, shakers, and full of energy. As a speech-language pathologist, you know that keeping their attention during a preschool speech therapy session can sometimes feel like a workout. The good news is that there are simple, effective ways to keep therapy fun, focused, and full of learning.

1) Use a Visual Schedule
Many preschoolers thrive when they know exactly what to expect. Having a visual schedule ready before the session and reviewing it as soon as the child enters can help set the tone for the day. If you have a student who enjoys being in charge, you can even create the schedule together.

2) Follow Their Lead
Following a child’s lead doesn’t mean they’re running the session—it means you’re planning activities that are meaningful and motivating for them. When therapy is based on their interests, whether that’s animals, cars, or a favorite story, they’re more likely to stay engaged and participate.

3) Offer Choices
Giving a child the opportunity to choose between two activities, such as puzzles, books, or games, can make them feel more involved. That small moment of choice can spark enthusiasm and improve focus throughout the session.

4) Incorporate Movement
Preschoolers are not made to sit still for long periods, so movement is your ally. Adding activities like treasure hunts, dancing, role-playing games, hopscotch, or Simon Says keeps learning active and fun. Offering movement breaks before they get restless helps keep the energy positive.

5) Use a Break Card
Therapy can be challenging for young learners, and having a break card available gives them an appropriate way to ask for a short pause. Knowing they have the option to take a break often makes them more willing to complete a task.

6) Use the Right Amount of Cues
If a child is reluctant to participate, it may be because the task feels too hard. Adding extra support, such as visual cues, modeling, verbal prompts, or multiple-choice answers, can make the activity more approachable and less intimidating.

7) Keep Little Hands Busy
Preschoolers often need something tactile to help them stay focused. Playdough, toys, sensory bins, and interactive story activities keep their hands moving while their minds stay engaged. My Puppies and Playdough and Interactive Adventure Stories Bundle are two of my favorite go-to options.

8) Be at Their Level
Getting down on the floor or sitting at a low table puts you at eye level with your student. This physical closeness can help build trust and connection, which often leads to better engagement.

9) Be Entertaining
Children respond to energy and enthusiasm. Bringing in songs, dances, silly voices, and props can make therapy sessions more inviting. If you are having fun, your students are more likely to feel the same way.

10) Be Flexible
Even the best plans don’t always go as expected. Have a variety of activities ready, and be prepared to switch things up if something isn’t working. Staying flexible keeps the session flowing and ensures that the child remains engaged.

Keeping preschoolers engaged in speech therapy is all about finding the right balance of structure, flexibility, and fun. Whether you use visual supports, incorporate movement, or choose hands-on activities, the goal is always to create meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences that help every child thrive.
